Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)

What is BHRT?

BHRT, short for bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, refers to a treatment where hormones identical in structure to those produced by the body are administered. BHRT differs from commonly used synthetic hormones like conjugated estrogens (Premarin) or progestins (medroxyprogesterone). Unlike synthetic hormones, bio-identical hormones carry fewer risks and side effects.

Methods of Administering Bio-Identical Hormones

Bio-identical hormones can be administered through various routes, including oral ingestion, topical application (transdermally), vaginal application, as pellets, or through intramuscular (IM) injections.

The Maven Wellness approach utilizes a unique combination of topical, oral, and vaginal applications. Although there are multiple approaches to hormone administration, Maven Wellness relies on research and clinical experience to achieve results while prioritizing safety and a conservative approach.

Who is Eligible for BHRT?

Every woman goes through a transitional phase called peri-menopause, which involves the shift from having a monthly menstrual cycle to no longer ovulating or menstruating. The aim of BHRT is to assist every woman in navigating this transition as smoothly as possible while maintaining their health and well-being.

During peri-menopause, many women experience symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, weight gain, insomnia, low libido, and vaginal dryness. While these symptoms are often considered a “normal part of the aging process,” they don’t have to be. Balancing hormones through BHRT can not only alleviate these disruptive symptoms but also provide benefits for the long-term health of the brain, heart, and bones.

BHRT with the Maven Wellness Approach

Here at Maven Wellness, we specialize in hormone balancing and hormone replacement therapy. Our approach is comprehensive and tailored to each patient, involving extensive hormone testing through blood, urine, and/or saliva samples. Understanding the debilitating nature of peri-menopause symptoms, we’ve dedicated a significant portion of our training to mastering the intricacies of hormone balancing. We conduct more frequent patient meetings compared to conventional medicine, scheduling them every 6 weeks or as needed, whereas conventional medicine typically has check-ups every 6-12 months.

Step 1

Initial Consultation

During this phase, you will have the opportunity to discuss your symptoms, and we will gain a deep understanding of your health concerns and conduct any necessary physical examinations. Baseline hormone tests will be ordered.

Step 2

First Follow-Up

We will thoroughly review your lab results with you and prescribe BHRT based on your specific needs. The hormones are commonly sourced from Great Earth Compounding Pharmacy and will be delivered directly to you.

Step 3

6-Week Blood Work Check-In

After being on hormones for 6 weeks, your blood will be drawn to assess your hormone levels and evaluate your body’s response to the treatment.

Step 4

Second Follow-Up

Approximately 1 week after the blood draw, you will meet with us to assess your response to the hormones and make any necessary adjustments. If you are feeling well, you can continue until your annual or semi-annual check-in.

Step 5

Additional Follow-Ups
(as needed)

If at any point you are not feeling your best, we will schedule another meeting with you to make the necessary adjustments.

Step 6

Annual Follow-Up Check-In

Most patients who are thriving with BHRT prefer to have check-ins every 6 months since they are aware that hormone levels are constantly changing. Once your hormones are balanced, you can extend the interval to 12 months before checking in with us.
